Various events 2018 Sep-Dec, including Smt Anupama Bhagwat (sitar)

Rapidly catching up on getting my record of events up to date....

2018 SEPTEMBER
  • Sat 15 Sep Port Macquarie: Spirit of Bhakti at Ekam Yoga Festival - Spirit of Bhakti features the songwriting talents of Rebecca Bornstein along with gorgeous harmonies and Indian vocals by Menaka Thomas, with myself on tabla. We had a nice tour around central NSW mainly thanks to Krissa Wilkinson of the Wauchope Community Arts Council. Unfortunately for the band, Rebecca is committed to university studies for some time, so these were our last concerts for the foreseeable future.

  • Sat 15 Sep Wauchope: Spirit of Bhakti - unfortunately I couldn't find more photos of this tour.

  • Sun 16 Sep Uralla: Spirit of Bhakti - performed at the Vajraling Gompa, thanks to Maxine.
  • Sun 30 Sep Mt Gravatt: Morning Ragas by Shrabani Choudhury (sitar) - Thanks to Swara Mohini for hosting this morning ragas concert.

2018 OCTOBER
  • Sat 6 Oct BEMAC: Soulful Sitar - Smt Anupama Bhagwat - For the last few years I have been lucky to host very high level sitar artists for a concert at QLD Multicultural Centre each year. (In 2016 we hosted Pt Kushal Das and in 2017 Pt Sugato Nag.) Anupama Bhagwat is a very fine sitarist in the same lineage as Pt Buddhaditya Mukherjee. She gave a sublime performance only spoiled at the end by explosive sounds coming from the QMC electrical system. Video of the concert on the way...
Thanks to Brian Sullivan for coming and taking photos - more photos in his Facebook album.

  • 10-25 Oct Quick visit to Varanasi
I managed to get a really cheap ticket and I was free (my family were in Japan) so I popped over to Varanasi for a couple of weeks! I had some wonderful lessons with my guru-ji Pt Pooran Maharaj, met my old friends, and saw a few nice local concerts. It was very refreshing.

2018 NOVEMBER
  • Sat 17 Nov Sunshine Coast: Sarod-Sitar Jugalbandi - USA-based Sarod player Soumya Chakraverty last visited Brisbane in 2011, which turned out to be a 25th school anniversary gathering of sorts, with our local sitarist Saikat Bhattacharya. Soumya visited Australia for a month and a half in late 2018, kicking off in Brisbane before heading to Sydney and Melbourne and returning for Woodford Festival. We started our tour with another two home concerts by the Calcutta Boys School alumni, firstly hosted by Dr Bhavana Jha in Sunshine Coast, secondly at my home in Tarragindi.

    After Sunshine Coast concert...
  • Sun 18 Nov Brisbane: Sarod-Sitar Jugalbandi
